Portland's Catholic community is anticipating the canonisation of Mary Mackillop, whose second miracle was confirmed by the Vatican at the weekend.

Mary Mackillop spent four years living in Portland where she was a governess and school teacher.

The confirmation of her second miracle paves the way for her to named as Australia's first saint.

Father Denis Ryan, of the All Saints Church in Portland, says Mary Mackillop is cherished by all of the town's residents, not just the local Catholic community.

"There's a very obvious, intimate connection with Portland and also not just among Catholics but also people of other traditions and the town itself," he said.
